Trained as a painter, Smiths engagement with Mexicos urban environment evinces her love of the formal qualities of both art and life: colors, textures, materials and the sculptural aspects of found objects play an important role in her work. The Parres Trilogy (2004-2005), with Rafael Ortega, filmed in a small town on the outskirts of Mexico City, uses monochromatic painting to investigate the ways in which we see. Smith highlights the technical means of both painting and film as they alternately obscure or reveal the scene in front of the camera. Location: Miami Art Museum
