MEXICO DF - La masacre en la que murieron 52 personas asfixiadas o calcinadas dentro de un casino de la ciudad de Monterrey, en el norte de México, fue el peor ataque del crimen organizado contra civiles, dijo el viernes el presidente Felipe Calderón
El mandatario, que inició a poco de asumir un combate frontal contra los cárteles del narcotráfico, declaró luto nacional de tres días por el atentado, que medios de prensa atribuyeron a la sanguinaria organización de los Zetas.
Las autoridades mostraron un video en el que varios hombres armados, que llegaron al lugar en cuatro vehículos, ingresaron el jueves en la tarde al "Casino Royale" en la capital del estado de Nuevo León y provocaron un incendio rociando gasolina que traían en garrafones.
"Es el más grave atentado contra la población civil inocente que haya visto el país en mucho tiempo", dijo Calderón en un mensaje, visiblemente consternado e indignado.
"Es evidente que no estamos enfrentando a delincuentes comunes, estamos enfrentando a verdaderos terroristas", agregó en un mensaje desde la casa presidencial.
Vestido con traje y corbata negros, el presidente arremetió contra Estados Unidos para que encuentre la forma de arrebatar las exorbitantes rentas económicas que los cárteles obtienen del mercado negro de las drogas.
También pidió que su vecino del norte cierre la "criminal venta de armas de alto poder" a los cárteles de la droga.
El presidente Barack Obama, que calificó el atentado como brutal, dijo que el Gobierno de Estados Unidos comparte con México el reto de enfrentar a las organizaciones criminales.
"Estados Unidos está y se mantendrá como un socio en esta lucha", dijo Obama en un comunicado.
Tras el ataque, las llamas obligaron a empleados y clientes a encerrarse en los baños y en otras áreas donde fallecieron sobre todo por intoxicación y quemados. Protección Civil dijo que el casino, que operaba en forma irregular, tenía dos salidas de emergencia que fueron insuficientes.
El alcalde de Monterrey dijo que en mayo se había clausurado el casino -localizado en una poblada zona donde hay colegios y comercios- por realizar una ampliación sin permisos, pero un tribunal local permitió su reapertura semanas después luego de que el propietario presentó un recurso legal.

Calderón anunció el envío de más fuerzas federales a Monterrey, hasta hace pocos años una tranquila ciudad empresarial, y al noreste del país, región donde el cártel del Golfo y su ex brazo armado Los Zetas mantienen violentos enfrentamientos.
La estrategia de Calderón contra los cárteles está siendo duramente cuestionada por opositores y organizaciones civiles debido al aumento de ataques contra civiles y abusos de las autoridades. Desde que inició la campaña antidrogas, en diciembre del 2006, han muerto más de 42,000 personas.
Monterrey es la ciudad más rica del país, sede de grandes empresas internacionales como la cementera Cemex, la tercera mayor del mundo.
El presidente viajó el viernes a Monterrey, se reunió con autoridades locales y guardó un minuto de silencio frente al casino, donde colocó una corona de hojas.
La fiscalía general ofreció una recompensa de 30 millones de pesos (unos 2.4 millones de dólares) por información que lleve al paradero de los criminales.
El gobernador de Nuevo León, Rodrigo Medina, dijo que lo más probable es que el ataque estuviera dirigido al propio establecimiento y que una decena de testigos estaba declarando. Por el momento no hay detenidos.
La prensa local dijo que los Zetas atacaron el negocio, visitado en las tardes sobre todo por mujeres de clase media y alta, después de que los dueños del casino se negaron a pagar extorsiones.
