Laura Bush, Cindy McCain to Address Opening Session at GOP Convention

While events have been sharply cut back at the Republican National Convention, delegates will get to hear Monday from first lady Laura Bush and Cindy McCain in an address to delegates at the end of the convention’s opening session call.

Bush said Monday that she and Cindy McCain will be “doing an event at the close of business” around 6 p.m. ET.

The event is expected to take place at the Xcel Energy Center, where delegates are meeting to call the convention into order so that later in the week they can nominate John McCain and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as the Republican nominees this year. The opening session so far is the only event scheduled as Hurricane Gustav bears down on the Gulf Coast, leaving the festivities out in the rain.

Laura Bush and Cindy McCain were also expected to attend the Louisiana delegation breakfast in Minneapolis and a luncheon for all the delegates.

Speaking on FOX News on Monday, the first lady said she understood how disappointed delegates are that the prime time convention addresses by her, President Bush and Vice President Cheney were canceled.

“They certainly understand why all of these events have been canceled but still I know they are disappointed,” she said.

President Bush was headed to Texas Monday morning, the opening day of the convention, to monitor emergency response operations as Gustav bore down on the Gulf Coast. The National Hurricane Center downgraded the hurricane to a Category 2 just as it was to make landfall, however, officials were concerned that a storm surge plus massive rains could flood New Orleans, which is below sea level but is protected by levees that have been strengthened since Hurricane Katrina three years ago.

The White House said Monday morning the president still had not plans to address the nation. He could still talk to delegates Monday evening remotely.
